Teach Guitar and Earn Money!

If you have been playing guitar for a few years then you may already possess a valuable skill capable of earning you lots of extra income or even a full time job! In this series of articles I’m going to begin to show you how I and others teach guitar successfully to generate income.

Perhaps you are under the false impression that one needs to be an awesome player in order teach guitar but I can assure you that this is not at all the case. In reality 95% of people coming to you for lessons will be beginners on acoustic guitar and they will make up the mass market of people applying to you for lessons.

Assuming you have been playing for a few years and are confident on guitar that is often all you need to be able to teach guitar to others. The best thing is that you already have the required skill; you dont need to learn anything new! Youre simply making use of a talent you already possess to create income for yourself.

Here’s the number one most important thing to teach guitar, even more that your playing ability, you need to be a good communicator with a friendly and approachable personality.

Its true that some people are fantastic guitar players but couldnt actually teach guitar to save their lives ” one does not automatically imply the other. When you teach guitar you need to be able to see things from the students point of view and to remember from your own experience just how hard it was at first to play guitar.

Once you understand things from the students side youll immediately become sympathetic to their situation be able to teach guitar to them in a successful and dynamic way.

Those of us who teach guitar enjoy some great benefits. The first one would be that it provides a valuable source of income and that you can teach guitar practically anywhere. Even in remote places youd be surprised how word can spread and the numbers of people who would be interested.

Part time or full time, when you teach guitar you have an enormous flexibility to structure your teaching hours as you like so they can fit around all your other commitments.

Since you are in control of practically every aspect of your teaching business, you have the freedom to size up any competition from other guitar teachers and adjust your lesson fees accordingly. You may well find that you have no competition at all.

Let’s explore one of the great myths of teaching guitar - that you must be an amazing player to do it. This is really not true at all. When you teach guitar the majority of students coming to you for lessons will be beginners on acoustic guitar as they represent the mass market of ‘guitar students’.

So long as you have been playing for a while and are confident I would suggest that it’s likely you are already good enough to teach guitar to this mass market of beginners. Normally when you enter a new venture to make money it involves some kind of learning curve but, you already know how to play guitar… the skill is already there! All you need is to apply yourself to teaching it.

Here’s the number one most important thing to teach guitar, even more that your playing ability, you need to be a good communicator with a friendly and approachable personality.

Can you go back in your mind and remember just how hard it was to play guitar when you first started? This is a very important first step. When you teach guitar you need to see things from the students point of view. Now changing from G to C is so effortless and easy, but it was not always that way… at one time it seemed really hard and this is how you begin to identify with beginners and teach guitar effectively.

A second great advantage is the freedom of being able to take a long weekend whenever I felt like it, or decide my own holidays, raise or lower my lessons fees. When you teach guitar for yourself, you are in control.
