Cheap Acoustic Guitars - What Choices

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

The main reason why many musical instruments are so expensive to purchase is the material which is used to make them. Certainly as you will soon discover those guitars that use materials such as wood as far more expensive than those that aren’t. But along with guitars being made from wood they are also made from graphite and plastic as well. But the problem with these kinds of cheap acoustic guitars is that they do not have the same sound quality as the wooden ones.

If you choose to buy a guitar not made from wood it will often not sound round and you may find that you give up the guitar because you become frustrated. Therefore, it is better if you can only afford to buy a cheap acoustic guitar you get one that is made from wood, rather than saving money on a guitar which you will not like playing.

When looking to buy a cheap acoustic guitar if you can purchase one that has a solid wooden top rather than one with a plywood top. As you will soon discover those with solid wooden tops produce a much fuller and richer sound than those that do not. Also when looking at investing money in an acoustic guitar choose one that comes with a solid wood back and sides.

There are plenty of such guitars available and one that should be high on your list to consider is the Seagull S6. Although not cheap it is certainly value for money as you are unlikely to want to buy another acoustic guitar once you have this one. This particular guitar has a solid cedar top and the sides are made from solid mahogany and which is why it makes such a beautiful sound when played. The fact is that this guitar is of such high quality then many professional musicians will keep this guitar even though they may have several more expensive ones as well.

The Seagull S6 will cost around $400-$500, but if you are at all serious about being a good guitarist, you should seriously consider investing money in buying this guitar. Buy by taking a look online you may actually find that you can get some great deals on this particular guitar.

As well as the Seagull S6 acoustic guitar there are other ones which you may want to consider such as the Yamaha F310. This guitar is cheaper because of the material used to make it. The top is made from spruce rather than cedar and sides and back are made using mahogany as the Seagull S6 is. Because of the difference in the top wood used one can expect to pay about $150 to $200 for this acoustic guitar. It is the price of this guitar which is why those just learning to play the guitar will buy one.

But as well as the Yamaha F310 there is also the Epiphone DR-100 which is slightly less in price than the Yamaha. On average you can expect to spend between $120 and $150 on this guitar. Just like the Yamaha this guitar is made using spruce and mahogany woods and is the ideal instrument for those first starting to learn how to play the guitar. However at some point in the future you will need to upgrade this one for something a little better, especially once you become a more accomplished guitarist.

Yes there are plenty of guitars available which will cost you less than $100 but these should be avoided at all costs especially as a guitar for learning with. The quality of the sound that they produce is badly effected because of the materials that they have been constructed from. In many cases you will often find that those who invest money in such guitars will often give up after a few lessons simply because the sound they make is not what they were expecting.

So if you are really serious about getting a cheap acoustic guitar either for your self or your child to play then avoid those in the $100 or less range. Classic Rock Legends

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

Classic rock is a term used loosely to describe albums released in the early to late 70’s by artists that have become legendary and therefore “classics.” Most of these artists were highly original and became influential on many bands in subsequent generations to come. No matter what era you were born in, almost any band you listen to has been influenced by artists and bands from the 1970s. Moreover, even if you are only in your teens and you think your favorite band is “totally original,” chances are they were influenced by a musician or group from that era, even if they don’t consciously know it.

The seventies were a great era because it was truly a ground breaking time for music. Nothing was copied or rehashed and everyone had their own sound. The 1970s represented a culmination and expansion of sounds that were experimented on in the 1960s. Bands such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, Free, Allman Brothers, Queen, Black Sabbath, Cream, David Bowie, Status Quo are all examples of acts who made their start in the 60’s but found their sound and style in the 70’s, and therefore gave rise to many other bands who then added their own flavour to these styles. Lesser known bands such as Uriah Heep, Wishbone Ash, Grand Funk Railroad, Scorpions (who became quite huge in the 80’s), and Thin Lizzy are worthy of mentions but would not necessarily legends, where as other acts such as Queen became absolutely huge and remain so to this day.

Rockers such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, Free, Allman Brothers, Queen, Black Sabbath, Cream, David Bowie, Status Quo are all examples of acts who made their start in the 60’s but found their sound and style in the 70’s, and therefore gave rise to many other bands who then added their own uniqueness to these styles. I could go on for hours about classic rock but some songs and albums rate a special mention for their guitar prowess and are worth your time to have at least a quick listen.

WISHBONE ASH: Guitarists: Andy Powell & Ted Turner. Choice albums: Argus and There’s The Rub. Excellent melody and twin harmony lead breaks, copied by many acts since! Very complex arrangements.

UFO: Guitarist: Michael Schenker. Choice Albums: Phenomenon and Force It. Songs: Rock Bottom One of the most exciting and dynamic solos ever recorded, he was about 18 at the time!

This decade produced excellent music and it is not just the big name bands. Learn more about all the bands and expand your music tastes. You’ll thank me when you did and you will be rocking out all night.

Getting a Record Deal is not Always Good

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

Most musicians often feel that getting signed by or being offered a recording deal should be their ultimate goal. While getting a record deal is a great achievement for a band, a contract can lead to many bad things the band never foresaw or wanted.

These days a recording contract is nothing more than a large sum of money to be recouped by the recording company through sales of your product. If it doesn’t sell to expectation you still have to pay the money back somehow. The recording companies have the methods to make the product sell, get airplay and distribute the product. Music companies loan you the money to make the music then they sell the music to get their money back, giving you just a small percentage.

If you can find a company who believes in the music and is just not into the business, that is great but keep in mind it is a business. They may try to change your sound in order to make it sell or kick band members out if it doesn’t it with a certain look.

Many times the band doesn’t produce the sounds a company wants and the music get shelved. Since you signed with the company, they own you and you can’t produce any music with any other company while under contract. You simply have to wait it out and this can take years. Just ask Billy Joel.

Often you will be all ready to record your songs and the record company will bring in a co-writer or producer who alters your compositions beyond all recognition to fit in with label’s style. You started to make a hard rock album and you end up with a rap album with all your instruments removed and samples replacing them. You thought you were Metallica only to end up like Jack Johnson. Then you have to go and promote something you really hate and your product is no longer recognizable.

Always remember you have to pay back the investment the record company makes so it is important to keep track of the money. Live gigs, touring, radio shows, shopping centers for the next ten years will help you pay back the loan. How do all those artists who make millions of dollars end up bankrupt? They had so much fun, they never watched where the money was going.

Quite often musical differences between band members and record companies are solved by the company getting rid of and replacing any member of the band who doesn’t agree with them. They are always trying to get work for their own players and artists who have already been signed. Quite often you will find all your guitar players work re-recorded by the studio guy or producer to fit in with the labels sound or smooth over tensions within the band.

Remember that the music business is 95% business and 5% music. Try to go independent if you can, market yourself on the web and build your own presence in the world. The more successful you are in the beginning the more bargaining power you have with the recording companies. If you do get an offer, get a good lawyer. You don’t want to waste five years in piano bars.

My First Music Gig

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

A young band’s first gig is always an exciting time. Many hours slogging it out in the garage or rehearsal room finally come to fruition with the offer of your first gig. These days, bands usually get a school or party gig or a shared bill with a few other bands or even a band competition as their first gig. Either way, the experience of the first gig should be enjoyable and exciting. You don’t want it to turn into a nasty experience with everything going wrong, which it will if you are not prepared.

The first thing you want to do is rehearse and rehearse a lot. Playing on stage is very different than playing in a garage or basement and the sound will be a lot different. In the garage, you are near your band mates, the sound echoes different, and you can hear better.. On stage, you can be separated a lot and you may not be able to hear the other guys or what they are playing. You need to flawlessly know how the song goes so that you’ll be able to communicate with your band mates without being near them.

Secondly, be confident. If you rehearse your songs well, you will do fine. If you are nervous, it will show and you will mess up and no one will wan to hire you again. This is your time to shine. You don’t want a bad reputation. Rehearse the songs in order so you know how each one will sound when you play them in the place and you can keep going if there is a problem. This will let you know how you will do in real life and if any problems might happen.

Make sure your guitars have new strings (but put them on at least two hours before you play and stretch them in), your drums have at least a new snare skin, check the condition of the kick drum skin too. You don’t want to have an equipment problems while you are playing and getting everything ready and fresh ahead of time can help prevent any issues.

Get to the gig early enough to be in no rush and bring as many as your friends as you can. Audiences generally have a ’sheep’ mentality and if they see or hear a bunch of people making a lot of favorable noises they too will go along and get the vibe. Packing the show with people you know will also be good for you- it’s good to see your friends come out and support you.

Your first music gig experience will be one you always remember and one you want to go right. Be sure to follow the tips above so everything goes smoothly and nothing bad happens. Even if problems occur, remember that this your first time- you’re learning and that’s ok. No matter what happens you’ll have a great time and be telling your kids and grandkids about the time you rocked the house down.

Eight Most Popular Guitars

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

There are literally dozens of guitar brands on the market, some good, some bad and some unbelievably excellent. If you want the best sound and quality, then it really does pay to choose a good brand name. You`ll pay more initially, but it`s worth it since you`ll just have to replace a cheap guitar pretty quickly. Going with an established name will pretty much ensure you`re getting great quality. If you`re serious about playing, then you should definitely take a look at one of the following guitars.

Fender

This company is probably the best known when it comes to top of the line guitars. This is where the famous Stratocasters come from . . . the original guitars in this line are now worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Fender also produces custom guitars, many of which can be seen in the hands of famous musicians like Santana.

Gibson

Another very popular guitar brand is Gibson, running almost neck in neck with Fender for quality. This brand has pretty much cornered the upper levels of the electric guitar market, though they also produce high quality acoustic instruments. Among musicians who use Gibson brand guitars are Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins and the Allman Brothers Band.

Yamaha

Well known as a musical company, Yamaha isn`t just a keyboard brand. They also turn out some great guitars that are sturdy and well suited to the life of a musician. Many of their designs are actually copies of more popular designs from the US, but they also have some original designs of their own that sell very well. It`s a brand name that is trusted, so many new musicians opt for this brand.

Ovation

These guitars are quite distinctive in how they look. With a rounded back and fibrglass body, Ovation guitars can`t be mistaken for any other brand. Besides the bowl-like back of the instrument, the sound holes are also different. Rather than one large hole, as other guitars have, these instruments tend to have groupings of smaller holes. Despite the odd looks, they are considered precision and provide great sound.

Martin

This brand is also known for its superiority in the world of guitars. Martins are usually more affordable than the top of the line guitars, but still produces excellent instruments. These guitars tend to be larger than the average acoustic guitar and are very popular among players who enjoy playing acoustic.

Alvarez

When it comes to acoustic guitars, Alvarez is certainly one of the first guitar brands that comes to mind. With over 60 years of experience in making precision instruments, Alvarez actually comes from a long Japanese line of well made classical instruments.

Jackson

Best known for the unique design of their guitars, Jackson instruments were originally meant to look like the Fender Strat, but quickly became a hardcore version made for rockers. The Jackson guitar line is usually associated with rock and metal music.

Guild

While perhaps not as well known as some of the above guitar brands, this is a good, solid company with years of excellent guitar making behind it. Guild is 100% American and has been around since the 1940`s. They are best known for making jazz guitars, but have since expanded into other areas, providing distinctive musical instruments and guitars.

There are plenty of different guitar brands to choose from, but if you want an instrument that will give you the quality of sound that you want and something that will last for a good long time, then it`s worth looking at the best in the business. The brands above are all top of the line and excellent guitars.
