We rarely think what is going to happen if we lose our means of refrigeration. If there is a disaster and we have to live without refrigerated foods it would be quite difficult. It is important for our society to find ways to keep our food cold or frozen. There are propane powered refrigerators that can help us keep our food cold as long as the necessary fuel is available. But we have to think about the times when you might have no propane available.
You might also use blocks of ice or dry ice to keep your food cold. But these products will also be available until you are able to get replacements. It will all depend on the continuing supplies delivering from the businesses but it may stop if the system breaks down.
When you pan your emergency food storage you have to think about many things. And besides salting food and canning we also need to come up with a plan how to survive without a refrigerator. The times may come when we will have to obtain foods like meat and vegetables on the local basis and we will not be able to store them properly for a long time, so, they would have to be consumed fast.
As for canning, its downside is that we will have to find replacements for the supplies like jars and lids. And if the canning supplies will not be readily available you have a chance of running out of those either. The supply routes might not be safe and the situation might get worse because of the savages that rob the shipments, etc.
According to all the above, this leaves us with a couple of other ways of preserving food like dehydrating, salting or smoking and the old-school root cellars. It is easy to construct a root cellar and you don’t require a lot of materials. You can have dirt floors in your root cellars as it is great to store vegetables and cement floor is better for storing meat and dairy products.
You can also grow sprouts for your family during winter. You could create a container garden for your herbs and other produce and grow it in boxes. Your dairy products will have a longer storage life when stored in the root cellar. You can make cheese from cows and goats milk. Your butter can be stored in an old butter crock for several weeks safely. The most important is to find one container for storing butter. Then you can get another container and place the first one with butter into it upside down and then fill up the second container with water that will prevent air penetrating the container with butter and spoiling it.
So, the main thing to make sure is that you will not be dependant on some products being unavailable if something happens.
