What is the Difference Between Earthenware, Stoneware, and Porcelain?

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Let’s take a tour around the typical kitchen. You will see various bowls, plates, mugs, and cups, but have you ever stopped to consider what they are made out of? Your typical dinner set is made out of three main materials, namely earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain. Most of us have heard of these materials before, but don’t know what the differences are. This article will help to shed some light on this issue…

Earthenware
—————-
Earthenware is what is known as a “low-fired” clay. This means that it is fired at a low temperature (usually around’15 degrees Fahrenheit). Made from a white and porous clay, it is sometimes called “ceramics” or “ceramic ware”.

Stoneware
————–
Stoneware is a “high-fired” clay, and as a result, is much stronger. It is fired at about 2185 degrees Fahrenheit, and becomes vitreous (i.e.: having the nature of glass). After firing it becomes sturdy and chip-resistant.

Porcelain
————
A number of different ingredients are used to make porcelain. The main material is a pale clay, like china white. Other materials that are incorporated are: glass, feldspar, and granite…which are ground, and then added to the clay. Water is added to make the mixture easy to work with. Worked into the desired shape, the mixture is then fired in a bisque kiln (at a moderate temperature). After glazing and then a “high-temperature” firing, the result is a piece of pottery that is both translucent and delicate.

Telling the Difference
—————————
With this bit of a background on what makes them different, how do we tell them apart? Here’s the breakdown:

1) Is it porcelain? The first thing to keep in mind is that porcelain is translucent, while stoneware and earthenware are not. Hold the item up to the light. Can you see the light shining through? If so, then it is porcelain.

2) If it’s not porcelain, we know that it must be either stoneware or earthenware. What do we do next? We need to check out the weight of the item. If it’s rather heavy for its size, then it’s stoneware.

3) Stoneware also has a “look” of hand-made pottery. This means that stoneware will have a texture to it. Earthenware will not.

4) Does the piece have a chip in it? If so, then examine it further. Is it very white and does it have a “chalky” look? Use your fingernail. Can you scrape off a bit more material? If the answer is “yes”, then it’s probably earthenware. Earthenware (once fired) has this white, chalky look, while stoneware has a darker, textured look.

5) If any part of the piece is unglazed, take a look to see if textured clay is showing through. This means that it is stoneware.

This completes our journey into the world of porcelain, earthenware, and stoneware…the main ingredients of today’s popular dinner sets. If a particular dinner set fancies you, then we have a lot more information on our web site.

Twin Baby Shower Invitation Ideas

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

It’s rare for twins to be brought into the world, so getting the chance to send out twin baby shower invitations only comes once in a lifetime. Not only will it be the mother-to-be’s first and most likely only pair of twins, but it will also most likely be one of the only baby showers you and the guests ever get a chance to attend. For this reason, it’s important to make sure every aspect of the celebration is special, even the invitations.

Planning just the baby shower itself can be incredibly difficult and stressful — sometimes it can be all too easy to forget the small details like specialized invitations for the event. Everyone expects invitations, and you surely don’t forget to do them, but sometimes, remembering the fact that twins are on the way might momentarily lapse from your mind, and you could forget to make the invitations something special.

If you are planning the party to have a particular theme don’t forget to design the twin baby shower invitations in that theme as well. While the obvious predominant theme is a baby shower, the shower that your planning may have a different theme. For example, if you are going to be setting up lots of flowers all over the place where the baby shower will take place, consider getting invitations that have flowers on them too. Getting the babies’ genders printed on the invitations is a sweet addition as well, as long as the mother has made their genders known to everyone.

It’s important to make the twin baby showers as special as you can, even if you have not decided on a theme for the shower. You can do this through specialized and customized invitations that have a unique design and even special paper. The mother to be will be appreciative of the effort you put in, and the guests will love the special designs as well.

Party favors are a big part of tying the celebration together as well. If you are going to be giving out favors to guests, a clever way to put a twist on things is to make the favors and the invitations match themes. If you do this, the shower does not have to have an elaborate theme or scheme to it and both the party favors and the invitations will become treasured memorabilia.

Everything to come up with in planning the baby shower is important, even the invitations you send out,. Though they may seem like minor details, you should make them as special as they should be, especially since the mother-to-be is about to have twins. Make a special event that much more special through putting some love and thoughtfulness into the twin baby shower invitations you design. Everyone will love them, and the mother to be will be the most appreciative of all.

If you’re planning a baby shower for a soon to be mother who is having twins, find out how to make the twin baby shower invitations truly memorable.

Have A Blast Party That You Planned

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Have you ever planned on a costume party before but didn’t know where to start, and ended up asking for professional help? Arranging a party can be a real hassle, especially if you’re in charge of everything. Choosing the theme, sending out invitations, decorating the place, deciding on the menu, picking out the adult costumes, the prizes, and entertainment for the guests are some of the most arduous tasks you’ll face as a party planner. It is therefore important to plan all of these things beforehand, and asking help from your closest friends is a start. After all, they will be the ones enjoying the party with you.

Selection of the theme is the most important part for holding a costume party. Hence, it should be the first thing to do. Try to make the party as enjoyable and fun-filled as possible for every guest. Make a note that the women’s and men’s costumes as per the decided themes should not be hard to find as this might make the guests coming in formals or other party wear with an excuse that they did not find the costumes! This is surely going to spoil the mood of the party. Keep everything within your budget and check if the decorations that you are planning to do will suit the venue or will the venue be able to accommodate the desired decorations.

Ask help from friends and family, and do some brainstorming! It’s always nice to get ideas from others especially when you’re running out of it; the more plans you can think of, the more likely the costume party will be a success. Grab a pen and paper, and list everything you’ve discussed. After some more brainstorming and sleepovers, decide on which ideas you’ll be using and which ones you can save in the meantime, in case the first chosen plans won’t be feasible.

The age group plays an important part in organizing a party. For example, the costumes for children’s costume parties will be more colorful, fun filled eye catching etc. Even the menu will also have to be exciting if the party is to be attended by kids in majority. If adults are going to attend the party, then the scenario is different. As compared to children’s costumes, the adult costumes are easily available. Open bars and cocktail drinks are seen in a adult party rather than candies and chocolates for a children’s party.

The invitations should be sent to the guests some considerable time before the party. This will make sure that the guests have the right costume and have arranged everything for that day. The invitation if sent out before a month form the date of the party will be fine. Since you are sending the invites a month before, you may mention a punishment for the guests who are not going to come in the right costume!

Also pay some attention towards the prize distribution. Announce that the best costume will be awarded a prize. Not only the best costume but something like the best innovation, most sexy etc are some other categories. This will create a lot of excitement amongst all the guests and the want of winning will bring them in the most exciting costumes!

A party without fun is not a party. So you should take each and every measure to make sure that the guests are having fun at the party. Now just imagine people sitting in a hall in beautiful costumes, each different from other, not doing anything except talking. Will that really be a party? Not at all. So nothing can be as fun as good music. An emcee with good people skills will work fine.

Do not forget to enjoy the party. Agreed that the guests should be happy, but you have organized the whole party. You have to enjoy the most, on your own as well as with the guests. The event’s success is your success. So celebrate!!!

Victorian Etiquette No Longer Works For Today - But What Does?

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

The Victorian Era came with calling cards to introduce yourself to your host. The closest thing we have to do that today is business cards but we are talking social not business here.

In those days, people would be properly announced when entering the home of the host and hostess of a dinner party. Gone too, are the Victorian dinner party etiquette manuals for hosting or attending such a dinner. Granted, those days had butlers and one spoke delicately about domestic solicitude, and when the servers took away plates and such, they moved as if they were wearing soft ballet shoes, so light was their touch and attitude as they moved noiselessly about. Guests on the other hand basically pretended that the domestics were not even there.

Today, the emphasis is no longer on the pretentiousness of the Victorian era, but rather making sure that both guests and hosts are relaxed, and that they enjoy each other, without interruptions by graceless and boorish behavior. This means that etiquette is still around but do know that good manners are still in fashion.

The necessity for inviting guests to a dinner party used to require that they were engraved on beautiful stationary and hand delivered by a servant. For a guest to respond to the invitation it was required that you respond immediately to the host with a formal response as well. Today we do not require that level of formality for anything other than a wedding or other formal affair but that does not mean that we have been reduced to the lack of consideration by using email for our invitations either.

It was customary to dress in your finest during Victorian times, but now, many dinner party invitations now stipulate a more relaxed atmosphere and may say that it is casual dress. We have retained, though, the etiquette that one should never dress in a manner that one ups ones host or hostess.

Good manners, also means that an invitation to a dinner party usually requires that you will give the hosts a small gift, such as flowers, or wine. Too, you will show up on time, not overly early, nor any later than ten minutes or so. Men should still seat their lady. Good manners also dictate that you use your napkin properly, and allowing the hosts to begin the meal by unfolding their napkin still signals that the meal has begun.

The act of a man standing when a lady rises from the table is not an outdated custom and still considered polite today. An area of custom that was never part of the etiquette rules are how we address technology. When entering a host’s home it is polite to turn off your ringer of all cell phones and only accept emergency phone calls. If you are expecting a potential emergency call it is polite to inform your host upon your arrival. Keeping your phone on vibrate in case of potential issues with babysitters is acceptable but keep in mind that should a call come in during your dinner party you are required to excuse yourself to a private location and not take the call in the presence of others.

Hosts need to be as ready as possible, anticipating that the food service will be taken care of properly, and if you need to adjust whats being served for special diets, do it graciously. Neither host nor guest should ever drink to excess.

Everyone commits a social blunder or faux pas every once in awhile. The trick when an error occurs is not to allow it to ruffle your feathers but instead make amends quickly and then move on with the occassion. Maintaining good manners as a guest will ensure that your social calendar is constantly being added to and you can enjoy all social occasions without any stress or worry.

Draw Attraction With Your Neon Jewellery

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

There is barely anyone who wouldn’t crave to stick out from the mob and look exclusive. Whether you look at the runway fashion shows, or the fashion of the streets, the major aim (besides looking stylish) is to make yourself distinguishing. Just as clothes play an significant part in making a statement, so do jewellery and accessories, especially when they are colourful.

Your ornaments aid in defining your routine and uniqueness. The most attractive and appealing kind of jewellery that gets noticed, in an instant, is neon jewellery, which is very popular these days, in meticulous among youthful girls. The jewellery pieces are not only up-to-the-minute, but they are also made of bold and beautiful attention-grabbing colours.

The kind of neon ornaments that you should costume in inevitability blend with your persona. The skin tone and the stature of the personality play an important role in the selection of the kind of neon jewellery that would look best on you. It appears well-dressed when worn with simple dresses, so the charisma of the jewellery becomes superior.

When it comes to trying neon necklaces, they appear most excellent with simple collar, which appear overstated because of the necklace. If you have a neckline that already has some kind of adornment, then it is best to select and wear some other kind of jewellery. However, neon necklaces do have an excellent ability to make a simple neckline look wonderful.

Neon bangles, no matter big or thin add a contemporary touch, style and appeal to an outfit. Neon jewellery does not only have a lot of charm, but it also has an individualistic approach.

The standards that are chiefly used in neon ornaments are neon carroty, pinks, limes, and yellows. These colours are not only startling but also describe a youthful and vivacious image of the person. The best way to wear neon jewellery, or any other neon fashion accessory, is with clothes of dull and simple colours, so that the appeal is increased with the accessories, and the colour of the jewellery would direct people’s attention towards you.

Neon trinkets are wonderful, whether it is worn with informal clothes like tops and slacks, or with a modish outfit while going clubbing. When wearing neon casually, the trick is to put on it with emaciated or straight cut jeans, along with a plain black or white tinted top to add to the spirit of the neon effect

One more brilliant manifestation with neon is to get into neon beads in layers on the wrist or around the neck. Whether you use basic tones of red, blue, brown, or brighter colours like lime, yellow or orange, is up to your taste and the show that you wish. If you are trying to generate a more formal look, you can also go for a single tidy piece of neon jewellery with a trouble-free and lovely outfit. However, you would be able to show it off the best if you use a more classical piece of jewellery.

The Happiest Day In a Restaurant Owners Life Is the Day He Sells the Restaurant

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

Opening a restaurant can be a rewarding but complex undertaking. It is a responsibility with many different pieces of a puzzle that the new owner must skillfully put together. For many, it is all about learning an entire new business from inside out, and doing so in a relatively short period of time. Regardless of your prior job experience or education opening a restaurant is a huge gamble for anyone, anywhere in the world.

The most important factor in establishing any new business is the location. A typical restaurant owner is generally required to commit to a long term lease, and he had better hope and pray he makes the right decision, because if he doesnt, he will be stuck in that location for a long time. Or pay a hefty penalty to get out of the lease early. On the other hand, the operator of a mobile food concession has the ability to change locations, without penalty, at any time, as conditions warrant. If business slackens off in one location, he can readily fold up his tent, so to speak and tow his trailer to another location.

The initial capital expenditures for building lease, leasehold improvements, outfitting the kitchen, seating, lighting, flooring and all other pre-opening costs can easily reach $200,000 or more. And if you pour all your money into the wrong location, that money is as good as gone. You cant take the leasehold improvements with you. On the other hand, the owner of a mobile food business has a substantially lower initial investment with a much smaller risk factor. If things do not work out at one location, he can hook up his concession trailer and bring his business to customers at a different location. And take his entire investment along with him.

If your idea of fun is constantly worrying about money, hiring consultants, training and managing employees, complying with government regulations, setting up systems, balancing the books, taking inventory, preparing menus, controlling theft and working 18 hour days, then you are a natural born restaurant owner. If this doesnt appeal to you, you might consider the simplicity of owning a mobile food business. Did you know that many hot dog vendors working downtown areas make more money than the majority of struggling to survive restaurant owners? And most of them work only 4-5 hours a day. Talk about a low stress job with a fraction of the risk.

Staffing a restaurant and keeping it staffed will be one of the most difficult and time consuming tasks the new restaurant owner will face. Unless you have a large family and friends to tap from, you will be constantly hiring, training and firing both full-time and part-time employees.

Managing a restaurant staff is a difficult task. It can be one headache after another. Employers find that many restaurant employees are unreliable and uncooperative. The restaurant business is plagued with staff turnovers. To add insult to injury your good employees are often wooed away by your competitors.

There are a number of other factors to take into consideration which will be covered in detail in subsequent articles. The list includes city ordinances and Health Department rules and regulations; advertising and marketing; menu selections; working capital reserves; inventory control; waste; bookkeeping; incorporation; income taxes, payroll and more. Running a successful restaurant is not a one-man job. You need a team of professional dedicated people and even then it never runs smoothly.

Opening a restaurant is a daunting task, but no matter what you put into it, in terms of time or money, it will not be successful if no one knows you exist. If you are taking over a location that was a restaurant at some point in the past, make sure you do not make the same mistakes that the previous owner did. Unless it was a management problem or some other obscure issue, restaurants usually fail because of their location or lack of working capital. Or as one restaurant critic jokingly remarked, The restaurant failed because the owner ran out of working capital due to a bad location.

Fun With Cocktails

There is a great deal to be said about the martini. There is so much that you can do with the drink itself! You may even find that while changing the drink itself you feel like the different tastes must be something new altogether. There are martinis that are mixed so that you could swear they were virgin while on the other hand you could end up with a mere hint of spice to your gin or vodka.

There are many ways to effect the overall product of the martini, not including the most obvious methods which would include changing what you actually put into the liquid. The ?breath? of the drink can be altered depending on whether you shake or stir it during preparation. That?s what makes the martini shaker such an important tool.

Though it may not seem it the martini shaker can be tricky. In order to use this appliance properly one must be quick both mentally and physically. From what goes into the container to how much force should be applied when using it the shaker is often misused.

Even though there are a great many drinks that come with fruit or flowers as decoration the martini is one of most interchangeable. It can range from something simple and sleek to something colorful and fun without losing the grace that embodies the martini.

The martini glass itself is important to the image that contributes to the individuals who are often seen drinking martinis. Often thought of as an ?adult? drink the slim glace is easily spotted and attributed as a symbol of quality both in persons an alcohol.

There are a number of colors and shapes for some of the less traditional martini glasses. Even so, they usual stick to the overall concept of the originals and can enhance the artistic quality of the drink.

It is customary to find things with ?bite? within the stunning depths of your martini. Lemon, olive, orange, and onion are common for the traditional martini.

Even with the ?common? dressings for the martini there is, as you would expect, a great deal to choose from depending on what kind of martini you are enjoying.

More often than not the objects found in your glass are doing more than just acting as dressings. They are set there specifically to be pleasing to you, either visually or through your taste buds. Sweeter drinks are obviously set with sweet compliments more often than not.

When it comes down to it martinis are great for any occasion. If you wish to keep them light for a family get together there?s a perfect martini for that. If you?re throwing your pal a killer birthday party and just want to go crazy there?s a martini for that as well! The possibilities are endless!
